The use of Compatible PAV, the Compatible PAV, and all HP products is governed by the terms
of your license agreements with HP.

Figure 1 Flow of I/O Requests Using Compatible PAV

When using Compatible PAV, alias devices must be assigned in advance to each base device
before they can be used. In

Figure 1 (page 6)

, the alias devices A, B and C are assigned to the

base device 1, the alias devices D, E and F are assigned to the base device 2, and the alias
devices G, H and I are assigned to the base device 3 within an LCU. If you use Compatible PAV,
only the alias device that is assigned in advance to each base device works as an alias device.

I/O requests converge on base device 1 when a host computer accesses it using Compatible PAV.
Because alias devices were assigned to device 1 in advance, I/O requests are automatically issued
to alias devices A, B or C. Similarly, if a host computer accesses base devises 2 or 3, those I/O
requests will also automatically be issued to alias devices assigned in advance.

When I/O requests are issued using Static Compatible PAV, base device 4 cannot use any alias
devices because no devices were assigned to it.
