LUN Manager

LUN Manager operations do not affect Continuous Access Synchronous operations.

Volumes that are under secure ports and/or that are assigned to host groups can also be
assigned to Continuous Access Synchronous pairs.

Volumes that are assigned to Continuous Access Synchronous pairs can also be assigned to
secure ports and host groups for LUN Manager.

Continuous Access Synchronous S-VOLs cannot be accessed by any UNIX/PC server host
except when the pair is split.

For more information on LUN Manager, see the HP P9000 Provisioning for Open Systems User
Guide
.

Thin Provisioning

A Thin Provisioning virtual volume (V-VOL) can be assigned to Continuous Access Synchronous
pairs.

You can use V-VOLs that are used by a Business Copy pair or a that are in an Auto LUN's
migration plan. To do so, follow these steps:

a. Delete the Business Copy pair and disable the Auto LUN setting.

b. Create the Continuous Access Synchronous pair.

c. Re-create the Business Copy pair and the Auto LUN's migration plan.

When specifying a V-VOL that has allocated pages to a Continuous Access Synchronous
S-VOL, be aware that used pool capacity will become temporarily larger than the actual
capacity, because pages must be reallocated in the V-VOL. Therefore, before creating the
pair:

Make sure that V-VOL pool capacity is sufficient.

Make sure that Pool-VOLs that are added to a pool are not blocked. If Pool-VOLs are
blocked, restore the volume status and then create the pair.

Guide

Performance Monitor

Performance Monitor software provides detailed information on I/O activity and hardware
performance in P9500 systems. Storage system usage and the performance data that is collected
and displayed by Performance Monitor enables you to:

Identify the optimum timing for performing Continuous Access Synchronous copy operations.

Determine the best locations for the Continuous Access Synchronous S-VOL (for example;
parity groups with less frequently accessed volumes to avoid bottlenecks of back-end activity).

Monitor storage system performance during Continuous Access Synchronous operations and
during testing activities.

Use the following procedure to lower the performance impact on Continuous Access Synchronous
operations when Performance Monitor is collecting data for one or more storage systems on the
same P9500-internal LAN:
1.

If Performance Monitor is collecting high amounts of LDEV data, disable this activity for one
or more storage systems, if possible.

2.

If Performance Monitor is collecting data for more than three storage systems on the
P9500-internal LAN, disconnect Performance Monitor, if possible, from one or more storage
systems before using Continuous Access Synchronous.
