L6 ENERGY & PROCESS ASSESSMENT PROTOCOL

2.5 Building Automation and Control Systems

2.5.1 Create building/air-conditioned space zones with separate controls.

2.5.1.1 Use night setback, or turn off HVAC equipment when building is unoccupied.
2.5.1.2 Install occupancy sensors with VAV system: set back temperatures and shut off boxes.
2.5.1.3 Variable speed drivers for fans and pumps.
2.5.1.4 Install system controls to reduce cooling/heating of unoccupied space.
2.5.1.5 Lower heating and raise cooling temperature setpoints when the area is too hot or too

cold.

2.5.1.6 Lower hot water temperature and development of peak-shaving strategies.
2.5.1.7 Lower humidifi cation and lower hot water temperature.
2.5.1.8 Lower humidifi cation and raise dehumidifi cation setpoints.
2.5.1.9 Turn HVAC off earlier.

2.5.1.10 Install HVAC night-setback controls.
2.5.1.11 Shut HVAC off when not needed.
2.5.1.12 Adjust thermostat settings for change in seasons.
2.5.1.13 Adjust housekeeping schedule to minimize HVAC use.
2.5.1.14 Install programmable zone thermostats.
2.5.1.15 Install controls to vary hot water temperature based on outside air.
2.5.1.16 Use variable speed drives and direct digital controls on water circulation pumps’ mo-

tors and controls.

2.5.1.17 Reduce operating hours of complementing heating and cooling systems (e.g., hydronic).
2.5.1.18 Reset supply air temperatures.
2.5.1.19 Evaluate thermostat controls and location.
2.5.1.20 Install programmable thermostats.
2.5.1.21 Lock thermostat to prevent tampering.
2.5.1.22 Ensure proper location of thermostat to provide balanced space conditioning.
2.5.1.23 Avoid proximity of heated or cooled air–producing equipment to thermostat.
2.5.1.24 Implement an energy management system (EMS) designed to optimize and adjust

HVAC operations based on environmental conditions, changing uses, and timing.

2.5.1.25 Create an energy management system to automatically monitor and control HVAC,

lighting, and other equipment.

3 Water Systems

3.1 Domestic Hot Water Systems

3.1.1 Install geothermal water heating.
3.1.2 Install decentralized water heaters.
3.1.3 Install desiccant cooling systems.
3.1.4 Install water heater blankets on water heaters.
3.1.5 Insulate hot water pipes.
