Shut Down and Open Computer

1. Shut down your Power Macintosh. If the com-

puter has been on for any length of time, wait
a few minutes for it to cool before beginning
the installation.

2. Disconnect the power and peripheral cables

from the back of the computer and move it
to an area where you can freely work.

3. With the front of the computer facing you,

open your Power Macintosh by removing the
side panel (Figure 1).

4. Identify the internal components of your

Power Macintosh. Touch the power supply
metal shielding (Figure 2) to discharge any
potential damaging static electricity. Release the
two latches that hold the drive bay and power
supply internal assembly in place (Figure 2).

5. Rotate the internal assembly out of the case

(Figure 3).

Remove Heatsink

Locate the processor heatsink on the logic board
(Figure 4). Place a small flat blade screwdriver
between the latch and the ZIF socket (Figure 4).
Press down on the top of the latch with your finger
while you press the screwdriver against the side of
the latch until you see the latch unhook from the
ZIF socket tab. Unhook the latch on the other side
of the heatsink and remove the latch. Once the
heatsink is unlatched, gently lift it away from the
processor and set it aside, but not on the mother-
board. There is no need to disconnect the wire
from the heatsink.
