Mantel Requirements (combustible or non-combustible)

 Use the table below to determine the maximum mantel depth allowed. The mantel depth (measured

from the face of the fireplace) must fall in the shaded portion of the table.

 Any material that protrudes more than 3/4” (19mm) from the non-combustible facing is considered a

mantel and must meet the mantel requirements.

EXAMPLES:

 You may have a 4” mantel at a minimum 43” above the base of the fireplace.

 At 46”, the maximum mantel depth is 8”.

Mantel Column Clearances

Combustible mantel columns (legs) that protrude ¾” (19mm) or less from the glass frame must meet the
facing clearances (minimum 2-1/4” (57mm) from the side of the glass frame – 0” from side of fireplace).

Combustible mantel columns (legs) that protrude between ¾” (19mm) and 4” (102mm) from the glass
frame or non-combustible facing require a 5” (127mm) clearance to side of the fireplace (7-1/4” 185mm
from the side of the glass frame).

Combustible mantel columns (legs) that protrude more than 4” (102mm) from the glass frame or non-
combustible facing must meet the side wall clearance (minimum 12” (305mm) from side of the fireplace -
14-1/4” 362mm to the side of the glass frame).

Non-combustible mantel columns do not have a minimum clearance.
