8.3.2 Recommended topologies

The table below provides the general recommendations for the CAN bus topology for different numbers
of units connected together. When three units are connected the CAN bus can be a line type or a star
type. The termination must be done at both ends but it seems to be no problem if also the middle unit
connects the termination resistors in a line type topology. When 4 or 5 units are connected, then
termination resistors must be removed from the middle units. If the CAN bus has 4 or 5 termination
resistors, the total bus termination resistance decreases too much for the CAN transceiver.
