Usage and Migration Considerations

You can identify and distinguish the OSS Core Utilities commands that share identical names with
the original OSS Utilities commands based on their T-numbers in their VPROC, or by the directory
where the binaries reside. The binaries of OSS Core Utilities reside in the /usr/coreutils/
bin

directory and those of OSS Utilities reside in the /bin directory. The commands that share

identical names cannot be used interchangeably as their options and output formats may differ.
Refer to the respective reference pages for details.
Some key differences of the OSS Core Utilities from the original OSS Utilities include:

The df utility lists the started filesets rather than all the configured filesets.

The df utility takes mount point name(s) as arguments.

The su utility cannot be used for changing passwords.

The -r option in the tail utility is not available (use the tac utility instead).

nroff

Formatting Tool

Beginning with the J06.16 and H06.27 RVUs, the nroff formatting tool is available with the OSS
Core Utilities product. If you are using the man utility prior to version T8626H04^ADQ, to use
nroff

, create a symbolic link to /bin/nroff from it using the command:

ln –s /usr/coreutils/bin/nroff /bin/nroff

This symbolic link enables the OSS man command to invoke the nroff formatting tool to
automatically render formatted reference pages from unformatted source files. On RVUs earlier
than J06.16 and H06.27, in which the nroff tool is not available, an attempt to read a reference
page from an unformatted source file results in the following error message:

Nroff/troff is not currently installed, this must be
installed in order to use formatted man pages.

On RVUs earlier than J06.16 and H06.27, HP does not ship unformatted source files in /usr/
share/man/man*

. However, if that set of directories is used, similar man command behavior

occurs.
For details about the nroff utility, see the nroff(1) reference page.

Using Commands That Share Identical Names

You must specify the full path when using a command or accessing the reference page of one of
the OSS Core Utilities or original OSS Utilities that shares the identical name. For example:

To use a command, you can specify the path by setting the PATH environment variable or by
preceding the command with the full path:

To use an OSS Core Utilities command, you can set the PATH environment variable:

export PATH=/usr/coreutils/bin:/bin:/home
