The Guardian file system is accessible from the OSS environment through the OSS /G directory
for local files or the /E directory for files from remote nodes.

Accessing Guardian Files From the OSS Environment

Files in the Guardian file system are accessed from the OSS environment through the /G and /E
directories, which are special directories in the OSS file system that serve as mount points for the
Guardian file system.

The /G Directory

The OSS file system includes a special directory named /G. The /G directory is not a normal OSS
directory. It is a special mount point for the Guardian file system. Through this mount point you
can access volumes, subvolumes, and files in the Guardian file system from the OSS environment
using OSS utilities.

The /G directory contains only three levels of hierarchy, not including the /G directory itself. The
three levels of hierarchy correspond to the volume, subvolume, and file structure in the Guardian
file system. For example, when you open the /G directory and list its contents, the names of the
volumes in the local Guardian environment appear. Each of the volumes contains subvolumes,
which in turn contain files.

The /E Directory

The OSS file system includes a directory named /E, which is a special directory for remote-node
files from the Guardian Expand network. You can work with remote OSS files from the root directory
of your local node by prefixing the OSS pathname with /E and the remote node name. For example,
pathnames can look like either of the following:

/E/node1/usr/share/man/cat5/filename.5

/E/node1/G/system/zossutl/T8620MAN

Specifying Objects in the /G and /E Directories

The /G and /E directories reside under the root directory ( / ) in the OSS file system. While in the
OSS environment, you can use the OSS change directory command (cd) to move to the /G or /E
directory.

Within both local and remote /G directories, the names of Guardian volumes, subdirectories, and
files appear as OSS directory names, subdirectory names, and filenames.

You can specify a file in the Guardian file system by entering the /G or /E pathname for the file.
To do this you must follow the rules for converting Guardian filenames to OSS filenames.

Visibility of the /G and /E Directories

Through the use of the UTILSGE environment variable, the system administrator can specify whether
the /G and /E directories are visible to one or more of the following specific commands:

chgrp

chmod

chown

cp

find

ls

mv

pax

rm

The possible values for the UTILSGE environment variable are:
