4 OSS Commands and Utilities
This chapter discusses the OSS end-user commands and utilities, file formats, and miscellaneous
files. (Commands typically used only by system administrators are not discussed.) Also refer to the
reference page for each command.
For additional information on user commands and utilities, you may find one of the books on POSIX
or UNIX commands, available at bookstores, helpful. However, not all of the commands and utilities
(and command options) described in these manuals are supported in the OSS environment. In
addition, these manuals will not describe use of OSS commands within the Guardian environment.
The OSS Utilities product (OSSUTIL – T8626 ) provides the essential OSS user commands and
utilities. Beginning with the J06.14 and H06.25 RVUs, the OSS Core Utilities product (T1202)
provides additional Open Source utilities. For information about the OSS Core Utilities, see
OSS
Core Utilities User Commands (page 185) .
Command Usage
OSS command names sometimes appear in documentation with two parts: the name of the
command, followed by a number enclosed in parentheses:
grep(1)
The names of functions sometimes do not include a number but do include empty parentheses:
exec()
Only the name of the command is used in a command line. The number is not included.
The number indicates the section of a traditional UNIX reference manual in which the reference
page of the command can be found.
The reference pages are usually organized by their function in UNIX reference manuals. OSS
generally adheres to this organization, as shown in the following table:
