You can create a backup of an instance or a database on the instance or the database level or
at the timestamp level.

When you create a backup on either the instance or the database level, Recovery Manager
creates a new virtual copy, and your backup software backs it up.

NOTE:

If the windows user performing the backup operation at the instance or the database

level does not have mount privilege due to absence of administrative privilege, the backup
creation will fail.

When you create a backup at the timestamp level, Recovery Manager mounts the existing
virtual copy, and your backup software backs it up using the same timestamp.

NOTE:

If the windows user performing the backup operation at the timestamp level on an

unmounted virtual copy does not have mount priviledge due to absence of administrative
priviledge, the backup creation will fail.

You can also schedule Recovery Manager to automatically create backups of instances or databases
or both.

NOTE:

You can configure Recovery Manager to automatically send email notifications when

backups are manually or automatically created. For more information, see

“Configuring Email

Notifications” (page 40)

.

NOTE:

You can execute concurrent backup jobs through Recovery Manager GUI and multiple

Recovery Manager CLI instances.

Manually Creating Backups at the Instance or the Database Level

When you create a backup of a virtual copy for an instance or a database, Recovery Manager
automatically creates a virtual copy and mounts it, your backup software backs the virtual copy
up to media, and Recovery Manager unmounts the virtual copy. By default, Recovery Manager
deletes the created virtual copy when the backup is complete. You can also choose to have Recovery
Manager retain the newly created virtual copy.

To create a backup of a virtual copy at the instance or the database level:
1.

In the node tree pane, right-click the instance or the database you want to back up and select
Backup to Media.

2.

From the Select Vendor list, select the backup software you are using:

Symantec NetBackup

HP Data Protector
