Overview

This chapter describes how to run the MTS Example STH Tension (Simplified) test and analyze test
data. The instructions and screen images pertain to running this test on the typical system described in
the

System Introduction

.

The MTS Example STH Tension (Simplified) test is provided with your system and includes data for five
test runs for you to learn about the analysis functions.

Note: The MTS Example STH Tension (Simplified) test does not use strain feedback. However,
because strain feedback in tension tests is commonly used, the following procedure includes
information that pertains to using an extensometer. This information is labled “Optional” wherever
it occurs. Use this information for learning purposes, or for performing tests that use strain feedback
such as the MTS STH ASTM A370 Tension (Extensometer-Actuator) test.

Prerequisite Tasks

1. Safety orientation
2. Turning on the station
3. Clear interlocks
4. Recover from a tripped limit

Testing Tasks

1. Position the actuator (upper crosshead and table)
2. Set up the load meter for specimen installation
3. Position the lower crosshead
4. Install the specimen
5. Optional: install the extensometer
6. Set up meters for the test
7. If required, resolve resource errors
8. Run the test
9. Save the test and generate a report
10. Remove the pecimen
11. Ready the load frame for the next test
12. Analyze the results
