Dell ActiveArchive™

Dell ActiveArchive allows the creation and preservation of snapshots of the Dell
PowerVault 735N system data volumes. When using snapshots, system performance
may be degraded, depending on the rate your data is changing and the number of
snapshots kept for each virtual disk. Read performance of the virtual disk remains
constant, regardless of the presence of snapshots. Read performance of the
snapshot is identical to that of the virtual disk. Write performance, however, may vary.
Each initial write to a virtual disk area causes the Dell ActiveArchive software to re-
write the date to the snapshot cache file, and the initial write is slower than if a
snapshot is not being used.

From the Dell PowerVault 735N NAS Manager home page, click Disks and Volumes
and then click ActiveArchive. Each snapshot is mounted as a volume on the file sys-
tem to allow read-only access by clients. Snapshots can be created immediately, or
scheduled as one time only or regularly repeated events.

This chapter provides information on the following topics:

Scheduled Snapshots

Adding Snapshots to the Schedule

Deleting a Snapshot Schedule

Editing the Properties of a Snapshot’s Schedule

Taking a New Snapshot

Deleting a Snapshot

Configuring the Snapshot Environment

Accessing Snapshots

Scheduled Snapshots

When you click Disks and Volumes and then ActiveArchive, the Scheduled Snap-
shot
page displays a list of all scheduled snapshots and associated tasks. Each
scheduled snapshot is identified by the scheduled time, day, frequency, starting date,
and target volume ID. Snapshots are identified by time and date, and are located in
the ActiveArchive directory. The ActiveArchive directory is located in the root of
each ActiveArchive volume. Only the Administrator can access the ActiveArchive
