System Administrator’s Guide

I have just received my
system and I have
attached a keyboard,
monitor and mouse
directly to my system
and I have not connected
my network cable. When
I turn on the power and
my system boots up, I
see the system log on,
open a DOS shell, run
some scripts and log off
the session.What is my
system doing?

If you have just received
your system, have not
connected a network
cable from a router to the
network interface card as
pictured in the System
Setup Placemat docu-
ment, and have not con-
figured the system using
the recommended steps
in the System Setup
Placemat document, the
system is looking for a
valid IP address, not find-
ing one, and then logging
off.

It is strongly encouraged
that you use one of the
three methods docu-
mented in the System
Setup Placemat to con-
figure your system. If you
must attach a keyboard,
monitor, and mouse,
then shut down and
power off the machine by
pushing and holding the
power button on the
front panel. You can
attach a network cable
from your router to your
network interface card,
and then power on the
machine.This lets
Microsoft Windows
Advanced Server see
that your system has a
network connection, and
then assigns an Autocon-
figuration IP Address.
This allows Kick-Start to
run, find a valid IP
address, and then disable
itself from executing.

I connected the network
cable but forgot to insert
the PowerVault Kick-Start
diskette before I pow-
ered on the system. I
used PowerVault Kick-
Start to configure my
system but I cannot con-
nect to the unit.

When PowerVault Kick-
Start booted up it did not
find a PowerVault Kick-
Start diskette or a system
running DHCP to obtain
an IP address, so the
operating system
assigned your system an
Autoconfiguration IP
address.

Use the administration
serial port as outlined in
the System Setup Place-
mat document.
