Virtual Devices

After you have selected the zpool you want to change, you can add, change or delete virtual devices. The
virtual device will be comprised of one or more disk slices, and may be utilized in a mirrored, striped or
parity disk configuration for higher performance and/or availability. When selecting a virtual device to add or
change, a window similar to the following will appear:

If you want to delete this virtual device, enter a “D” in the Create Option field. You can select from one of
the following RAID types by pressing F4 at the RAID Type field:

stripe: This is the default virtual device type or RAID 0: Data will be striped across all devices selected
in the Device List field. You must add one or more devices to this virtual device. If only one device is
selected, no striping will occur.

mirror: Data will be mirrored (RAID 1), or copied, across the devices in the Device List field. This
option requires at least 2 devices be selected for mirroring to have affect.

raidz1: This is a RAID 5: (single parity) configuration, and requires at least 3 devices be selected in the
Device List field.

raidz2: This is a RAID 6: (double parity) configuration, and requires at least 3 devices be selected in
the Device List field.

spare: The disks selected in the Device List field will not have data written to them but will be held for
use in case of a failure of another disk in the pool. If a disk failure occurs on a mirrored or parity
configuration, one of these disks will automatically replace it and be syncd with the most recent data.

Select or de-select one or more devices for the virtual device by pressing F4 at the Device List field. When
all selections are complete, press F3 or ESC to return to the

Zpool Settings

screen.

ZFS Filesystems

After you have created at last one zpool, you can add any number of ZFS filesystems to it. Note that ZFS
filesystems are special filesystems contained only in zpools, not to be confused with other

Solaris

Filesystems

. When selecting ZFS Filesystems from the

ZFS Settings Menu

, you are given a list of existing

ZFS filesystems and an option to add a new one:
