To do their job, airbags inflate with
tremendous speed—over 100 mph. So while
airbags can save your life and reduce the
severity of injuries, they can also cause
abrasions and bruises. And if you sit too
close, or don't wear a seat belt, or don't sit in
a proper position, an inflating airbag can
cause broken bones or more serious injuries.
Wearing a seat belt, and sitting up, well back
from the steering wheel or dashboard, reduces
the chance of injuries caused by a crash or an
inflating airbag.
