4 X 8 DIGITAL CONTROL BRAKING SYSTEM

The next step in the evolution of Digital Control:
The 4 X 8 Digital Control Braking System

In the sport of fishing, Shimano has studied how reels cast for
many years. This resulted in innovations such as Easy Mag,
VBS, and most recently, the award winning Digital Control
(DC).

The Digital Control Braking System allows the electromagnetic
brake to be applied in intervals of up to 1/1000 of a second by
programming the brake curve on the DC Circuit Board inside of
the reel.
But there was still something to be improved. The original DC
used one pre-programmed braking curve and allowed for 8
settings along the curve to increase or decrease the amount of
braking force. This curve was an excellent, all-around curve,
that was ideal for most bass fishing or inshore applications.

However, the DC was not ideal for slow spool speeds, such as
Skipping or Pitching. Also, because of the pre-programmed
curve, competition casters or surf casters were limited, even by
the lightest settings.

On the other hand, many people have turned to spinning reels
under extremely windy conditions, because baitcasters are
notoriously difficult to control under these situations, even
with the most educated thumb. Could DC be the answer for
this?

For the new 4 X 8 Digital Control Braking System, Shimano
thoroughly analyzed casting mechanisms for various

environmental and mechanical conditions.
This resulted in dividing various conditions into 4 modes:
• Extreme Distance Mode
this curve provides over 50,000 RPM and is designed for very
specific applications
• Long Distance Mode
all-around profile for most fishing applications
• Accuracy Mode
excellent for skipping or pitching
• Wind Mode
allows for long casts into a head wind

In "4 X 8" the "4" refers to these modes, where the "8" refers to
8 different brake strength settings per profile. (Total of 32
brake settings from the 4 X 8 DC Braking System)

On the following pages, the ideal uses, descriptions and
explanations of each of the 4 Modes will be explained.

weight
