Time codes

The time code signals generated by the TCG (time code generator) are recorded on the tape and read by the TCR (time code
reader). The time codes indicate the tape’s absolute value in increments of hours, minutes and seconds.

User bit

The user bit is a 32-bit (8-digit) information frame contained in the time code signals which is made available to the user. The
figures 0 to 9 and the letters ABCDEF can be used for this bit.

Time code generator (TCG) and user bit generator (UBG) modes

The time code generator (TCG) and user bit generator (UBG) have two main modes: PRESET and REGEN.
Within the PRESET mode, where is a REC RUN mode and a FREE RUN mode. Within the REGEN mode, where is an internal
regeneration mode and four external regeneration modes.

Details of the various modes are provided below.

(TCG) TCG advance takes place only during TC recording.
(UBG) UBG values are saved.

(TCG) Regeneration always takes place using the VTR1 TCG.
(UBG) Regeneration always takes place using the VTR1 UBG.

(TCG) TCG advance takes place always.
(UBG) UBG values are saved.

(TCG) In the PLAY mode, values are preset (regenerated) to the TC values on

the tape.
In modes other than PLAY, TCG advance takes place always.

(UBG) In the PLAY mode, values are regenerated to the UB values on the tape.

In modes other than PLAY, UBG values are saved.

(TCG) Regeneration takes place if time codes are superimposed on the VIDEO

IN signal.
TCG advance takes place always if no time codes are superimposed on
the VIDEO IN signal.

(UBG) Regeneration takes place if user bits are superimposed on the VIDEO IN

signal.
UBG values are saved if no user bits are superimposed on the VIDEO IN
signal.

(TCG) If time codes can be read from the tape in VTR1, regeneration takes place

using those TC values.
TCG advance takes place always if no time codes can be read from the
tape in VTR1.

(UBG) If user bits can be read from the tape in VTR1, regeneration takes place

using those UB values.
UBG values are saved if no user bits can be read from the tape in VTR1.

(TCG) Regeneration occurs when the TC signal is input to the TC input

connector.
The TCG keeps advancing all the time when the TC signal is not input to
the TC input connector.

(UBG) Regeneration occurs when the UB signal is input to the TC input

connector.
The UBG sequence is maintained when the UB signal is not input to the
TC input connector.
