13.3 When a function does not work, check here
If you still have difficulties after following the instructions in this section, reset the unit. Disconnect the
power cord and turn OFF the handset. Reconnect the power cord and turn ON the handset.

Problem Cause & Solution
I cannot hear a dial tone. L If you use a splitter to connect the unit, remove the splitter and
connect the unit to the wall jack directly. If the unit operates
properly, check the splitter.
L Disconnect the unit from the telephone line and connect a known
working telephone. If the working telephone operates properly,
contact our service personnel to have the unit repaired. If the
working telephone does not operate properly, contact your
telephone company.
L The power cord or telephone line cord is not connected. Check the
connections.
L If you connected the fax machine through a computer modem,
connect the fax machine directly to a telephone line jack.
The unit does not ring. L The ringer volume is turned OFF. Adjust it (page 24).
Problem Cause & Solution
The unit displays “ CHECK
PAPER” even though
paper is inserted.
L The paper is inserted halfway. Insert it correctly (page 19) and
press {START} to clear the message.
The other party complains
they only hear a fax tone
and cannot talk. L FAX ONLY mode is set. Tell the other party the number is only used
for faxes.
L Change the receiving mode to TAM/FAX mode (page 55) or TEL
mode (page 54).
The {REDIAL} / {PAUSE}
button does not function
properly. L If this button is pressed during dialling, a pause will be inserted. If
pressed immediately after a dial tone is obtained, the last number
dialled will be redialled.
The receiving mode does
not function properly. L The Distinctive Ring is set (feature #31 on page 58).
During programming, I
cannot enter the code or
ID number. L All or part of the numbers are the same as another code or ID.
Change the number:
–
remote operation ID: feature #11 on page 67.
– fax activation code: feature #41 on page 69.
The ink film runs out
quickly. L The help printing function, copy function, and reports also use ink
film.
L Even if there are only a few sentences, every page that comes out
of the machine is considered a full page.
L Turn OFF the following features:
–
sending report: feature #04 on page 67.
– journal report: feature #22 on page 68.
– Caller ID list: feature #26 on page 68.
The base unit beeps. L Recording paper/ink film has run out. Press {STOP} to stop the
beeps and install paper/ink film.
