1.

Clearly define all of the storage locations within the warehouse, includ-
ing the boundaries that separate them.

2.

Determine whether these locations accommodate all the item types,
shapes and sizes that are required. This may include zones, aisles, rows,
and storage areas in a controlled environment for storing hazardous,
valuable, or temperature controlled materials.

3.

Once these locations are set, identify them with a combination of num-
bers and letters.

Defining Items

Define the items the warehouse contains. Typically, these items and
descriptions are already defined in the system that is currently processing
invoices.

Establishing Material Flow

After the usable warehouse space and item size have been determined, you
are ready to identify the process by which material is moved through the
warehouse (i.e., material flow). A good starting point would be the move-
ment of the top twenty percent of inventory.

The basic warehouse layout example below shows material flow through a
warehouse. What are the requirements of moving material into storage and
out of storage at your warehouse facility?
