About AES3 and AES-3id

The 6416dio Digital I/O module transmits and receives digital data in the

AES3 or AES‑3id formats, standards specified by the Audio Engineering

Society. The AES3 digital audio format is sometimes referred to as “AES/EBU.”

The AES3 format provides for the serial digital transmission of two channels

of digital audio over shielded twisted‑pair cable, using the latching three‑

pin XLR connector.

Aviom produces the 6416dio with DB25 multipin outputs that can be

connected to XLR breakout cables or patch panels for devices that use

the AES3 specification, and with BNC outputs conforming to the AES3‑id

specification.

The interconnecting cables used with AES3 data are specified to be balanced

and shielded with a nominal characteristic impedance of 110 ohms at

frequencies from 100kHz to 128 times the maximum frame rate.

A variation on the AES3 format, AES‑3id, provides for the transmission of

digital data using unbalanced coaxial cable, with an impedance of 75 Ohms.

Connectors used with this format are of the locking BNC type. AES3 and AES‑

3id are electrically different and should not be interfaced

Information concerning the interfacing of the two AES3 data formats is

available from the Audio Engineering Society website.

Additional information about the AES3 format and other standards is

available from the Audio Engineering Society website, www.aes.org.
