Masks

NewsShare NAS is a UNIX-based operating system. Although Windows/DOS
has a larger set of modes than UNIX specifies for permissions, all NewsShare
NAS files and directories are assigned a UNIX-format octal mask for
permissions. A mask is a three-digit number. The first digit gives permission to
the file owner. The second digit gives permission to a group. The third digit
gives permission to all others. The digits assign the permissions as follows:

The owner must at least be able to read any file he or she owns; therefore the
first digit must always be not less than a one (1). The initial default file mask is
744 (which means an owner can read, write, and execute any file he or she owns
that is saved to this workgroup, but the group and all others can only read it).

1. Enter 3 digits for the Directory Create Mask to grant permissions for this

directory. When a DOS/Windows directory is saved in a NewsShare NAS
file system, the mask assigns permissions to the new directory at the time the
directory enters a NewsShare NAS file system. Permissions for individual
directories can be changed later. New DOS/Windows directories are
assigned new permissions, but all existing directories retain the permissions
that were originally assigned. The initial default directory create mask is
754. UNIX permissions are defined in the table above.
