Basic Connections

For communications to take place between two devices, the transmitter of one
device must connect to the receiver of the other device. The connection must be
achieved through a crossover function, which could be a crossover cable or a port
that implements the crossover function internally. All the 10/100BASE-TX ports
are wired for MDI-X (media-dependent interface-crossover). Use the proper
cabling to connect to devices as follows:

To connect to a switch, hub, or bridge, use a crossover cable.

To connect to a workstation or file server, use a straight-thru cable.

Autonegotiation on the 10/100BASE-TX ports is set by polling the connected
device. The two devices will negotiate the speed, 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps, and
select whichever is most optimal.
