Fixed Characters

Format Entry Prompt:

Enter any fixed characters:
(underlines for field length)

Fixed characters appear in the data field and remain constant.
You can enter fixed characters for any field except price, date
or time. The operator cannot change fixed characters during
data entry. To insert a

(reserved space) in fixed data, use

the shift/space key.

Fixed characters appear to the operator at data entry with a
prompt. The operator enters the remaining data. The
combination of fixed characters and entered characters then
prints on the supply.

Example:

The vendor number 44218 always appears in a
UPC-A bar code for a group of products to be
marked. To save the operator time, enter 44218
at the

Fixed characters? prompt. At data entry,

the operator sees this number and enters the
remaining digits (indicated by the underscores) for
a specific item from that vendor.

When defining fixed characters for most fields, you can enter
any type of characters. For example, even if you define a field
as numeric, you can enter alpha characters as the fixed
characters. the exceptions are UPC, EAN or MIS bar code
fields. The data for these fields must always be numeric.

To enter a fixed blank space, press the shift key, then press
the space key.

You’ll also see this prompt when you enter data for a fixed data
field.
