2 Requirements and specifications

This chapter provides basic system requirements. In addition to the information here,

Planning for

Continuous Access Synchronous (page 15)

provides many specifications, recommendations, and

restrictions for the elements of a Continuous Access Synchronous system that require attention
before setting up and using Continuous Access Synchronous.

System requirements and specifications

The following table describes general system requirements.

All LU types that the XP P9500 supports (OPEN-3, OPEN-8, OPEN-9, OPEN-K, OPEN-E,
OPEN-L, and OPEN-V).

RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID6 configurations.

RAID levels supported

XP P9500 can be connected to:

Storage systems at primary
and secondary sites

XP P9500 (70-01-01-xx/xx or later)

XP24000/XP20000 Disk Array ((60-07-51-xx/xx or later)

XP12000 Disk Array or XP10000 Disk Array (50-09-98-xx/xx or later)

When pairs in a consistency group belong to multiple XP P9500s, XP24000/XP20000
Disk Array, XP12000 Disk Array, and XP10000 Disk Array cannot be used.

Continuous Access
Synchronous

Must be installed on primary and secondary system.

Separate license codes are required for each storage system.

Synchronous only. The XP P9500 does not support Asynchronous.

Can co-exist with Continuous Access Synchronous Z.

Other required licenses

However, when combining Continuous Access Synchronous and Thin Provisioning, the
following licensed capacity limitations apply:

If using a Thin Provisioning THP V-VOL (virtual volume) for the Continuous Access
Synchronous P-VOL or S-VOL, the capacity of the allocated pages for the THP V-VOL
will be counted as the licensed capacity of Continuous Access Synchronous.

If the actual licensed capacity exceeds the available licensed capacity, Continuous
Access Synchronous can be used as usual for 30 days. After 30 days, only split or
release operations will be allowed.
