en Fitting and commissioning to be carried out only by

qualified personnel in accordance with the
operating instructions.

If used in safety relevant applications, additional
measures are necessary, e.g. in Europe the
standards listed under the EU machine guidelines
must be observed. Without additional measures in
accordance with legally specified minimum
requirements, the product is not suitable as a
safety-relevant component in controllers.

Check whether the EMMS-AS complies with what
you have ordered.
Depending on what you have ordered, these mo-
tors contain a holding brake (EMMS-...-RSB/-RMB)
as well as an encoder (EMMS-...-RS.../-RM...).
It is possible to flange fit a gear (

EMMS-AS-100-S-...

1 Function and application
The EMMS-AS is a permanent field, electrodynamic,
brushless servo motor. The encoder integrated in the
motor supplies motor data, speed and position signals to
the higher-order controller.
These signals transfer the ange of rotation related to a
zero position.
The controller functions in a closed-loop control circuit
and regulates the motor to the specified nominal values
for current, speed and position with a high degree of
accuracy. The motor must always be operated within its
permitted characteristic curves.

The EMMS-AS is available with the following options:

Servo motor EMMS-AS has been designed for driving
positioning systems.
The holding brake of the EMMS-AS-...-RSB/-RMB is not
suitable for braking the motor.

2 Transport and storage
• Ensure storage conditions as follows:

– storage times should be kept to a minimum
– cool, dry, shaded storage locations protected from

corrosion (storage locations (

! Technical specifica-

tions).

• Consider the weight of the EMMS-AS.

Depending on the design, the EMMS-AS can weigh up
to 5 kg.

3 Conditions of use

Note

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Incorrect handling can result in malfunctioning.
• Ensure that the specifications in this chapter are

always observed.

• Compare the maximum values in these operating

instructions with your actual application (e.g. forces,
torques, masses, speeds, temperatures).
The use of force to move the rotor shaft will, under
circumstances, reduce the functioning of an integrated
holding brake.

• Please observe the regulations applicable to the place

of use and comply with national and local regulations.

• Use the EMMS-AS in its original state. Unauthorized

product modification is not permitted.

• Take into account the prevailing ambient conditions at

the location (

! Technical Specifications).

• Note the warnings and instructions on the product and

in the relevant operating instructions.

Open cable ends on the rotating motor can under
circumstances lead to dangerous high voltages.

1.First leave the motor uncoupled from the axis.
2.Make sure that the controller is switched off.

Cancelling the Controller Release signal is not sufficient.

3.Connect the EMMS-AS completely to the controller as

shown in the following tables.
The ready to use cables from Festo (

! Accessories)

offer sufficiently large cable cross sections as well as
screening of the motor/encoder cable with earth
contact on both sides.

Narrow mounting situations can cause an accumulation
of heat.
• Make sure that the motor has sufficient space for

heat dissipation.

1.Clean the shaft of the motor 3.

The coupling will only grip without slipping on a shaft
pin which is dry and free of grease.
If fat solvent media enters the bearing, it will wash out
the service life lubrication of the bearing.

2.Place the EMMS-AS on the motor flange 4.
3.Connect the motor to the mechanical components at

the threaded holes 2.
Ready to use motor kits for linear drives can be found in
the Festo accessories.

4.Tighten the fastening screws (

and motor kits).

5 Commissioning

Note

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The motor can unexpectedly be started if the brake is
released.
• Make sure that the motor windings are not energized

before the brake is released.

• Apply current first to the holding brake. The motor

will then rotate freely. Depending on the type of
device, the controller will unlock the holding brake
automatically.

• Complete the commissioning of the motor in conjunc-

tion with the controller in accordance with the con-
troller manual.

Warning

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Hot parts of the housing can cause burning.
• Make sure that people and objects cannot come into

direct contact with the motor.

7 Care and maintenance

Warning

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Burnt dust can under circumstances catch fire.
• Clean the motor housing of dust regularly.

8 Dismantling and repairs

Note

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Masses which suddenly slide down may cause injury to
people in the vicinity of the EMMS-AS.
• Make sure that the work load on the operating linear

drive is in a safe position (e.g. in the case of a vertical
drive in the lower end position).

• You can now remove the EMMS-AS from the linear

drive.

If repairs are required:
• Return the motor to Festo.

Repairs by Festo will maintain the safety standards.

• Assemble the EMMS-AS again as follows:
1.Push the slide or the cantilever of the linear axis into a

safe position.

2.Fit the motor kits in accordance with the specifications

in the assembly instructions.
