APPENDIX C - UPGRADING THE MODULE’S FIRMWARE
To update the Shapeshifter module’s firmware, it is simplest (although not simple) to use the Altera
Quartus II Standalone programmer software. This software is available for Windows or Linux. The
Windows program can be run on a Mac using Parallels. The following is the instructions for Windows 7.
1. Go to the Altera.com web site to download the Standalone programmer software.

2. Select the most recent version of Quartus II (v13.1 as of this writing).
3. Select which operating system you want to work with (either Windows or Linux)
4. Select “Direct Download”. If you have trouble downloading you could try to use the Akamai
download manager, but this requires additional annoying steps.
5. Click on the “Additional Software” tab.
6. Click on the big blue/white downward arrow to the right of the “Quartus II programmer and
SignalTap II” box. (you won’t be needing the SignalTap II software but it gets installed anyway).
You will be taken to a page requesting you to sign in. If you don’t already have an account on
the Altera site, you will have to create one. It is free. Once logged in, you may have to click on
the download arrow again to begin the download.
