29. Reasons for poor stitches and how to make adjustment
Whenever sewing difficulty is encountered, make the adjustments as noted below.
Condition Reason
Method of Adjustments

When the fabric is not
feeding.
• Insufficient presser foot pressure. • Increase presser foot pressure
(page 33).
When the needle breaks. • Needle not inserted properly. • Insert needle correctly or replace
with correct needle (page 7).
• Fabric being pulled too hard. • Do not pull the fabric by hand.
Use hand only to guide the
fabric.
• Loose needle set screw. • Tighten screw firmly.
When the thread breaks. • Incorrect threading. • Thread machine correctly (page
11, 12, 15)
• Bent needle or needle point
damaged.
• Replace needle (page 7).
• Thread tension too tight. • Adjust tension (page 13, 14,
16 ~ 20)
• Thread tangled. • Thread correctly (page 11, 12,
15)
• Needle inserted incorrectly. • Insert needle correctly (page 7).
When stitches skip. • Needle bent or needle point
damaged.
• Replace needle (page 7).
• Needle set loosely. • Set needle firmly in position
(page 7).
• Incorrect threading. • Thread machine correctly

• Wrong needle used. • Use Singer Cat. 2054, #14.
• Insufficient presser foot

When stitches are

When the machine does
