Minimizing network latency

This topic details steps you can take if your client’s program is slow or unresponsive during a

meeting. Latency, the time lag between sending a message to a remote computer and receiving a

response, can cause noticeable performance issues in SMART Bridgit software.

Symptoms

l

Connecting to the SMART Bridgit Server takes a long time.

l

The screen updates slowly when you view a shared desktop.

l

SMART Bridgit software doesn’t respond to your mouse or keyboard when you use remote

control.

Solution

Try the following to troubleshoot network latency issues:

l

Verify that you're using TCP and UDP network protocols. See Verifying communication

protocol on the next page.

l

Check if you're connecting through a proxy server. See SMART Bridgit and firewalls on page

11.

l

Check your network bandwidth. See Examples of bandwidth requirements on page 54.

l

Measure latency and packet loss rate. See Measuring latency and packet loss on the next

page.

Other suggestions

Because you have limited control over the network outside of your LAN, you have limited control over

network latency issues. However, you might be able to improve the connection between your LAN

and your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

You can try these options:

l

Read the specifications of your server and client computer Ethernet card throughput rates.

Also, check your network device rates. If they're low, upgrade the hardware.

l

Verify that your Internet transmit and receive speeds match the speed guaranteed by your ISP.
