2. Let the samples analyze by an authorized organisation. A radia-

tion source is judged untight when more than 185 Bq (5 nCi) are

detected in the sample of the tightness test.

Note:

The specified values is valid for the USA. national regulations can

prescribe other limit values.
If the source is probably untight, carry out the following steps:

Inform the radiation safety officer

Take suitable measured to avoid contamination of the environment

by the source. Secure the source.

Inform the responsible authority that an untight source was

detected.

Tip:

If you are operating a version with increased protection against dust

and moisture (version D, M, N), the source is protected with two

additional seals. The condition of the seal can be judged more easily

using the following methods.
Hang an identical seal onto the source container with a wire or small

cable strap so that it is subjected to the ambient conditions. From the

condition of this seal you can draw conclusions about the condition of

the installed seal.
If the seal on the outside become porous or defective, you probably

also have to exchange the seals of the source holder.

7.5 Rectify faults

The operator of the system is responsible for taking suitable meas-

ures to rectify faults.
The radiation safety officer is responsible for all matters having to do

with radiation protection, especially ensuring that the radiation protec-

tion ordinance is observed, and can prescribe appropriate measures

if problems or malfunctions occur.

In case of troubles, call in urgent cases the VEGA service hotline

under the number +49 1805 858550.
The hotline is available to you 7 days a week round-the-clock. Since

we offer this service world-wide, the support is only available in the

7.6 Reaction in an emergency case

The action in an emergency case described here, must be applied

immediately in the interest of the safety of the staff to secure an area

in which there is an unshielded source or is assumed.
An emergency situation exists if a radioactive isotope is no longer in-

side the source container, if the source container cannot be switched

to position OFF or if an increased local dose rate was detected in the

proximity of the source container.
