• If you are installing a hot-swap hard disk drive, save the removed hard-disk-drive dummy tray in case

you later remove the hot-swap hard disk drive and need a dummy tray to cover the drive bay.

• If you are replacing a failing hot-swap hard disk drive and are instructed to return the failing hot-swap

hard disk drive, follow all packaging instructions and use any packaging materials that are supplied to
you for shipping.

Replacing the hot-swap hard-disk-drive backplane

Replacing the backplane for server models with eight 3.5-inch hard-disk-drive bays

Attention: Do not open your server or attempt any repair before reading and understanding “Safety information”
on page iii
and “Guidelines” on page 85.

This topic provides instructions on how to replace the backplane for server models with eight 3.5-inch
hard-disk-drive bays.

Before you begin, print all the related instructions or ensure that you can view the PDF version on another
computer for reference.

Note: To show the backplane clearly, the system fans are omitted from the illustrations in this topic.

To replace the backplane for server models with eight 3.5-inch hard-disk-drive bays, do the following:

1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server. Then, disconnect all

power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the server.

2. If the server is installed in a rack cabinet, remove the server from the rack cabinet and place it on a flat,

clean, and static-protective surface. See the Rack Installation Instructions that comes with the server.

3. Remove the server cover. See “Removing the server cover” on page 87.

4. Locate the backplane. See “Components of server models with eight 3.5-inch hard-disk-drive bays”

on page 35.

5. Remove all the installed 3.5-inch hot-swap hard disk drives and dummy trays (if any) from the

hard-disk-drive bays. See “Installing or replacing a hot-swap hard disk drive” on page 166.

6. Record the cable connections on the backplane and then disconnect all cables from the backplane.
