Shooting with the Zoom

Depending on the distance to your subject, you can use the 10× optical
zoom or combine the optical zoom and digital zoom (

p.80) to magnify

the image by up to 20× or 80×.

1. Zoom in or out.

Look at the image on the LCD monitor as you adjust the zoom with the

zoom lever.
Sliding the zoom lever towards T zooms in and enlarges distant

subjects. The camera will focus on subjects roughly 3.4 feet (1.0 m) or

more away.
Sliding it towards W lets you include a wider area in your shot. The

camera will focus on subjects roughly 0.4 inches (1 cm) or more away.
The slider is shown blue for optical zooming and red for digital zooming
(

p.80).

POINT

You can also defocus the background by using the optical zoom to

enlarge your subject.

ATTENTION

The more you zoom in, the more susceptible the image is to camera

shake.

MEMO

The digital zoom can be set to 205, 805 or OFF in the recording menu
(

p.80).

When the camera is turned off or the Auto power off function is

activated, the zoom setting reverts to wide-angle (W).
You can restrict zoom operation to a specified wide-angle setting by
selecting “STAGE” in the scene setting (

p.57).
