10.1 Practical Measuring Hints

Haze measurements are only
reasonable on high gloss surfaces.
Therefore, the message RANGE!
will be displayed if the gloss values
are below 10 units.

If the value is below the unit’s
measurement range for haze the
display will indicate < 10. (Hlog
10 … 500 units).

Please note, however, that the
measured values are transmitted
without prior notice to a printer or
PC, if connected to the measuring
unit, and are entered into the unit’s
memory in the STATISTIC mode.

Proper measurements are possible
only on smooth surfaces.

Measurements on contaminated,
scratched or damaged areas of a
specimen can only be useful if you
try to evaluate the extent of
deterioration of such a surface on
the basis of the measured values.

Since you cannot assume that the
reflection properties are equal over
the entire surface of the specimen,
measurements should be
performed at different locations on
the sample and the average value
and the standard deviation should
be determined.

If the sample exhibits textures or
gloss characteristics which are
directionally dependant, the
textural features and the direction
of the incident light during
measurement should be specified
in the test report.

Samples that must be measured a
number of times in the course of
an investigation (e.g. weathering
samples) should be marked
accordingly to ensure that
measurements are taken at the
same point during subsequent
tests.
