GENERAL INFORMATION

Introduction

Read this section carefuily before

you

attem pt to

repair the diesei engine. The section contains vaiuabie
tips pertaining to the repair and/or repiacem ent of en­

gine parts.

When is Major Maintenance Required?

Major engine repairs are usualiy required as a result

of excessively w orn cylinders, pistons, rings and valves.

Data that is gathered from periodic m aintenance and

inspections w ill Indicate the need for m ajor m ain­
tenance. Occurence of any one or m ore of the follow ing

w ill indicate a need for m ajor repairs:

Loss of com pression pressure below the stated

lim it.

An increase in oil consum ption.

Increase in fuel consum ption.

Engine w on’t start or starts w ith difficulty.

D

Loss of engine pow er.

D

Rough or noisy operation.

Excessive blow by of com bustion gases through

the engine breather.

Som e of the m ajor causes of the sym ptom s listed

above are (a) W eak battery or defective starter m otor,

(b) w orn cylinders, pistons or rings, (c) incorrect valve

clearance, (d) m alfunctioning fuel injection pum p, (e)
incorrect injection tim ing, (f) defective injection nozzles.

General Rules of Repair

W hen perform ing m aintenance on the engine, the

follow ing general rules should be com piled w ith:


Keep the w ork area neat and uncluttered. Ar­

range w ork table(s), engine stands, parts bins,

etc., in a logical sequence of disassem bly.

Prior to disassem bly, locate any alignm ent or

reassem bly m arks on parts to be disassem bled.

If alignm ent m arks cannot be found, place your

ow n alignm ent m arks on the parts.

Pay close attention to the condition of parts

during disassem bly. Many defects w ill be evident

prior to the actual disassem bly of parts.

Use the proper tools for each job.

Use new gaskets, seals and o-rings during reas­

sem bly.

Use a torque w rench to ensure that all fasteners

are properly tightened.

NO TE: Som e com ponents require a special torque

value w hich Is given In the reassem bly sequence In

this m anual. Parts not requiring a special torque

value should be tightened to the value recom ­

m ended
