.

General
Description

Printed circuit board (PCB) designers need an accurate estimate of the
amount of power a device consumes to develop an appropriate power
budget, design the power supplies, voltage regulators, heat sink, and
cooling system. You can calculate a device’s power using the Microsoft
Excel-based PowerPlay Early Power Estimator spreadsheet available
from the Altera web site or the PowerPlay power analyzer in the
Quartus

®

II software. You need to enter the device resources, operating

frequency, toggle rates, and other parameters in the PowerPlay Early
Power Estimator.

This user guide explains how to use the PowerPlay Early Power
Estimator spreadsheet to estimate device power consumption.

1

These calculations should only be used as an estimation of
power, not as a specification. Be sure to verify the actual power
during device operation, as the information is sensitive to the
actual device design and the environmental operating
conditions.
