13. Appendix E - System Performance

The following is a list of steps that you can take to maximize the performance of
MCNRCD:

Make sure that all of the MCN modules that are configured in the GCF files of

the loaded screen configuration file are connected to the MCN network
(including MCN modules that are not displayed on the current screen but that
are configured in the GCF file).

When a screen file is loaded, MCNRCD establishes communications with
each MCN module that is defined in the GCF files that were loaded. If
MCNRCD cannot talk with a particular module (it is powered off or is not
connected), then MCNRCD will log a ‘no configuration data received’ error
for the module. MCNRCD will then, periodically, attempt to establish
communications with that module. This attempt to re-establish
communications will slow down MCNRCD operation.

Run the HIB and MCNRCD at the highest possible DTE baud rate

(preferably 38400 baud).

If using modems, make sure the modems are set for Automatic Speed

Buffering or Constant Speed DTE so that the HIB and PC can run at the
highest possible baud rate, even though the modem line speed may lower.

If using modems, enable both data compression and error correction.

If possible, disable logging to the disk. The time the PC takes to write the log

information to the hard disk can have an impact on overall system
performance, depending upon the speed of your PC’s hard disk and the
amount of data being logged to disk.

You will experience slower system performance if your monitoring and

control system includes more than 10 Comparator I/O Modules (CIB modules,
for example), and you are running the HIB and MCNRCD with DTE rates of
9600 baud. Updates to the screen from the comparator will be fast, but
responses from FORCE VOTES and FORCE DISABLES (using either the
keyboard or the mouse) will be slower.

To increase system performance, run the HIB and MCNRCD at higher baud
rates (preferably 38400 baud).
