When you disconnect a volume or volumes, they stop accepting host I/O, and all data in cache
is written to the volumes (data is destaged). Also, the mapping settings are preserved. When the
volumes are reconnected, they are assigned the same settings.

Prerequisite requirements

Before disconnecting volumes or systems, processes must be resolved or stopped, as described in
the following table.

Required operation

Activity in the external volume

Stop I/O to the volume and un-mount the volume from the host.

I/O to the external volume from the open
system host is in progress.

Host I/O is forcibly stopped if you disconnect when I/O is in progress.

Stop the host I/Os to the volume and perform the Vary Offline operation.

The external volume is online from the
mainframe host.

Delete the pair.

The external volume includes LDEVs used
in a copy pair*

You can disconnect without deleting a Business Copy or Business Copy Z
pair when pair status is PSUE or Suspend/SUSPER.

Delete Fast Snap data pool.

The external volume includes LDEVs
registered to a Fast Snap data pool.

Perform the following operations on THP V-VOLs associated with the external
volume:

The external volume includes LDEVs
registered to a Thin Provisioning pool
volume (THP V-VOL).

Stop using the THP V-VOLs.

Block the THP V-VOLs using Virtual LVI/Virtual LUN.

Delete the migration plans.

The external volume includes LDEVs for
which Auto LUN processing is in
progress.

Z, Continuous Access Synchronous, Continuous Access Synchronous Z, and Fast Snap.

Disconnecting an external storage system, all mapped volumes

When you disconnect an external system, the mapped external volumes in the system are also
disconnected. This is the primary method for disconnecting all the mapped volumes in an external
system.

Before disconnecting a mapped volume, review

“Prerequisite requirements” (page 56)

Procedure 5 To disconnect an external system and its mapped volumes

1.

In Remote Web Console, click External Storages in the Storage Systems tree.

2.

In the External Storages window, select the row for the external storage system to be
disconnected.

3.

Open the Disconnect External Storage Systems window in one of these ways.

In the External Storage Systems tab, click Disconnect External Storage Systems.

From the Actions menu, select External Storage > Disconnect External Storage Systems.

4.

In the Disconnect External Storage Systems window, review the volumes that will be
disconnected, then click Apply.
