COMPRESSION

Data compression is a process where the effective throughput is
increased by encoding data in such a way that fewer bits are
required to represent it. Popular compression algorithms typically
reduce the size of the data by half, effectively doubling the rate at
which it is transmitted. And with four-to-one compression, the data
rate may quadruple.

No configuration is required to enable the Netopia ISDN PC Card's
compression functionality. Compression algorithms currently
suppor ted by the Netopia ISDN PC Card include LZS (STAC) and
MPPC (Microsoft). If the system to which you are connecting
suppor ts one of these algorithms, it will automatically be used.

Some of the Netopia ISDN PC Card inter face connectors have LED
indicators that provide an instant status view. These indicators
show the status of the connection to the remote device (B-
channel) and the status of the link to the ISDN switch (D-channel).
The following table lists the LED states and their meanings:

The ISDN line is activated but not yet
operational.

On

The ISDN line is activated and operational, but
the por t is not connected.

Attempting a connection with a remote device.

PPP, PPP, or V.120.

A Multlink PPP connection was attempted, but
only a single-link PPP connection has been
established.
