Windows 2000/XP UPS Service Configuration

Windows 2000 and Windows XP, similar to Windows NT, includes a service for an Uninterruptible Power Supply
(UPS). The mechanism for notifying Windows 2000/XP to shut down is nearly the same as for NT. The only difference
between Windows NT and Windows 2000/XP is the software used to monitor the serial port for the ShutDown
notification from the Power On/Off +Aux. In particular, in place of Microsoft’s previous NT UPS Service, a new ‘UPS
Service’ now exists in the Power Options category of the Windows 2000/XP control panel. The following instructions
define the necessary software components and the correct configuration for the new Windows 2000/XP UPS feature to
operate with the Power On/Off +Aux ShutDown/

RE

BOOT, model #PPNT.

Windows 2000 Service Pack 1

Service Pack 1, or later, for Microsoft Windows 2000 is required. The Service Pack update will correct problems that
exist in the original release of Windows 2000, including problems in the newer UPS feature. To verify that Service Pack
1 has been installed, select ‘My Computer’ on the desktop and click the right mouse button. Next, left-click the mouse
while selecting ‘Properties’. The screen that appears should include the following information about the system:

If no Service Packs are indicated, you must contact your system administrator or Microsoft for an update. At the time
this guide was created, Service Pack 2 was the current Service Pack release and no problems have been noted. As is
always the case, it is best to keep your system(s) up-to-date with the latest Service Pack. No known problems have been
found with the UPS Service present with XP which, at the time this guide was created, was identical to the UPS Service
present with Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
