Windows NT/2000/XP Automatic Logon

When a Windows NT system boots, the operating system expects a local user to press the <Ctrl><Alt><Del> key
sequence to bring up the logon dialog box from which the user will login with their user name and password. This poses
a problem for remote booting since a user is not at the system to press the expected key sequence. Similarly, Windows
2000 and Windows XP may require a user be present to provide manual login information as well.

Fortunately, Microsoft has provided a means of automating the logon procedure so that the system can boot using a
default user name, default password, etc., all while the system is unattended. This feature of NT/2000/XP is generally
known as the Automatic Logon feature, or the AutoAdminLogon.

Correct, up-to-date Instructions for enabling the Automatic Logon feature should always be obtained from Microsoft.
Specifically, the Microsoft Support Knowledge Base should be searched and any related question should be directed to
Microsoft.

At the time this guide was created, the Knowledge Base was found to contain the following three articles containing
information about enabling the Automatic Logon.

Article ID # Q97597
Title: "How to Enable Automatic Logon in Windows NT 3.x and 4.0"
Applies to Windows NT Server and Workstation versions 3.51 and 4.0, and also Windows 2000 Server

Article ID # Q234562
Title: "How to: Enable Automatic Logon in Windows 2000"
Applies to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

Article ID # Q315231
Title: "How to Enable Automatic Logon in Windows"
Applies to Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, and Windows XP 64-Bit Edition

Also available from Microsoft is a set of utilities called Tweak UI. The current version at the time of this publication
was Tweak UI version 1.33, compatible with Windows 95, 98, Millenium Edition, NT and 2000. For Windows XP a
compatible Tweak UI version could be found with Microsoft's PowerToys for Windows XP. The Tweak UI utilities are
found in the Control Panel after installation. The Logon tab within Tweak UI provides a gui-based method for
automating a user logon. To obtain Tweak UI, go to www.microsoft.com and search for "Tweak UI".
