18.5 Hardware requirements
Global Copy is an optional licensed function of the IBM System Storage DS6000 series. The
licensed function is the Remote Mirror and Copy (RMC), and is the same that is used to
acquire the Metro Mirror and the Global Mirror licensed functions.
You have to purchase the corresponding licensed function for the primary and secondary
DS6000 systems.

“Licensing” on page 525.
All DS6000 series licensed functions are enabled, authorized, managed, activated, and
enforced based upon the physical capacity contained in a 1750 system.
Enablement
refers to the purchase of a feature number to technically activate the associated
licensed function. Each licensed function is
enabled
for a 1750 system through acquiring the
corresponding feature numbers.
Particularly for Global Copy, the 1750 feature that must be ordered is the Remote Mirror and
Copy (RMC) licensed function, feature number 53xx; see Table 18-2.

Each licensed function feature number purchased for a 1750 machine enables that function
for the entire 1750 system.
Authorization
refers to the purchase of a feature number to establish the extent of IBM
authorization
—license size in terms of physical capacity—for use of an associated licensed
function. This is also referred to as the
authorization leve
l.
The extent of IBM authorization for the use of a licensed function on a 1750 system is
established by acquiring 53xx feature number on the 1750 base enclosure. The same 53xx
feature numbers acquired to enable a licensed function also establish the extent of IBM's
authorization.
The 53xx feature number on a 1750 base enclosure establishes the authorization level for the
entire 1750 system. For example, a 1750 system with a Model 522 base enclosure and two
Model EX2 expansion enclosures requires the acquisition of 53xx feature numbers only on
the Model 522.
