The Network Interface Server software communicates with the Network Interface Node,
which resides on each controller of the DS6000. From this point, the Network Interface
then interacts with the microcode that operates the controllers.
2105 ESS 800 management structure
In Figure 2-2 on page 11, you can see that:
The client uses either DS CLI or a ESS Copy Services Web browser GUI to issue
commands to the ESS 800 Copy Services Server running on an ESS 800 cluster. The
client could also use the DS GUI to issue commands to the ESS 800 Copy Services
Server if a DS6000 SMC or DS8000 HMC is available to route them through (not shown in
the diagram).
The ESS 800 Copy Services Server then interacts with the microcode, which operates the
ESS 800.
2.2.1 Remote Mirror and Copy between Storage Complexes
It is possible to use Remote Mirror and Copy between Storage Complexes as depicted in
Figure 2-3. In this scenario, there are three Storage Complexes. The complexes are
connected at the top of the chart by SAN connections (solid lines) and at the bottom of the
chart by an Ethernet LAN (dashed lines).

2.2.2 Differences between the DS CLI and the DS GUI
The DS CLI cannot manage several domains in a single session. However, if a single DS CLI
client machine has network access to all Storage Complexes, then that client could issue
concurrent DS CLI commands to each complex, each of which would be managed by a
separate DS CLI session. The DS CLI can be script driven and scripts can be saved.
Therefore, by using DS CLI, you can achieve automation.
