System Monitoring and
Maintenance Using the SP GUI

This chapter describes how to use the SP GUI to perform monitoring and
maintenance.

9.1

How to Upgrade the SP Firmware

This section explains how to upgrade the firmware on the ILOM Service Processor.

Both the service processor (SP) and BIOS firmware are tightly coupled and are
always updated together. A single firmware image contains both the SP and BIOS
firmware. When the SP updates the BIOS, the Sun Fire X4100 or Sun Fire X4200
server is held in reset, that is, the system is rebooted if it were running or powered
on and put into reset if it were powered off. The system is held in reset until the
firmware flash operation is complete.

If power to the system fails (for example, if the wall socket power fails or the system
is unplugged) during the firmware update procedure, the SP could be left in an
unbootable state. If that were to happen, it is possible to recover the Sun Fire X4100
or Sun Fire X4200 server so that it will boot, but the SP will need to be serviced by a
Sun-qualified service technician.

9.1.1

Before You Begin

Log in to the service processor (SP) as Administrator to reach the ILOM web GUI.
Only accounts with Administrator privileges are enabled to upgrade the service
processor firmware.
