Chapter 7: Roof Assembly

Assembling a Laminated Rafter

Laminated rafters nest together to give additional strength and should be assembled before attaching the
upper and lower rafters.

What You Should Know
All the lower rafters are assembled with rafter inserts.

1. Place the lower rafter (A) against the mating surface of the rafter insert (B), and install flange bolts (C)

and flange nuts (D).

NOTE: The top flange of the rafter insert is positioned underneath the top flange of the rafter.

2. Tighten all the hardware to the recommended torque specification. See

Bolt Torque Specifications,

After You Finish
Repeat this process for the remaining laminated lower rafters.

Assembling the Rafters

For the 135 ft diameter bins, each rafter will consist of a two piece design and will need to be spliced
together with rafter clips for assembling the A-frames.

1. Locate an upper rafter (A) and a lower rafter (B), and find the series of twenty holes on each end of

the upper rafter (A) and the lower rafter (B).

NOTE: Assemble rafters with the flanges facing in the same direction.

2. Place the lower rafter (B) in line with the upper rafter (A) and attach the rafter clips (C and F) to either

side of the mating surfaces of the upper rafter (A) and the lower rafter (B) , and align the series of
twenty holes together.
