1. Congratulations!

In the seca 985 electronic bed scale you

have acquired a piece of high-precision

equipment which allows bed-ridden pa-
tients to be weighed simply and gently.
seca has been putting its experience at

the service of health for over 150 years

now, and as market leader in many coun-
tries of the world, is always setting new

standards with its innovative develop-
ments for weighing and measuring.
The seca 985 electronic bed scale is used

primarily in hospitals and dialysis centres

in accordance with national regulations.

The scale has Class III CE approval.
In addition to the mobile bed scale with its

equipment trolley, there is also a stationary

model in which the measuring electronics

are accommodated in a housing under-
neath the bed. These instructions de-
scribe the mobile bed scale but apply

equally to the stationary model.
The new type of lifting mechanism allows

the scale to be installed with minimum ef-
fort. It is no longer necessary to move the

bed, and the swivel position of the bed’s

castors is irrelevant.
Weight is determined within a few sec-
onds.
The device allows weight to be monitored

for several hours. In the event of a power

failure, rechargeable batteries secure the

necessary power supply.
In addition to the conventional determina-
tion of weight, the seca 985 also has a

function for determining body mass index.

For this purpose, height is entered on the

keypad and the body mass index associ-
ated with the weight value is output.
A limit value can be set for use in dialysis

centres, with an alarm sounding if this val-
ue is not reached.
All the parts can be accommodated on the

equipment trolley to allow the scale to be

used on a mobile basis.

2. Safety

Before using the new scale, please take a little time to read the following safety instruc-
tions.
• Follow the instructions in the instruc-

tions for use.

• Keep the operating instructions and the

declaration of conformity in a safe place.

• Do not drop the measuring feet or sub-

ject them to violent shocks.

• The connecting cables between the

measuring feet and the equipment trol-
ley must be routed so that they do not
present a tripping hazard.

• Ensure that the mains unit has the right

supply voltage (see "Technical data" on
page 35
).

• Ensure that the cables are not crushed

and do not come into contact with hot
objects.

• The actuation levers should be folded

against the measuring feet once posi-
tioning is complete so as to prevent a
tripping hazard.

• As a function of its design, the

seca 985 bed scale may be used only
on floors which have been produced
according to the relevant national
standards for the production of floors
and floor coverings, with tolerances
having been observed. DIN 18202 ap-
plies to Germany.

• Have scale serviced and re-calibrated

on a regular basis (see chapter entitled
“Maintenance” on page 35).

• Have repairs carried out only by author-

ised persons.
