Overview of Quick Formatting

The Quick Format feature allows you to execute quick formatting of the internal volumes in the
background. When you execute quick formatting, you can make settings on the system configuration
(such as defining a path, creating a file system, and creating an HP StorageWorks XP Continuous
Access Software pair) before the formatting is completed. In addition, if any I/O operation is
performed from a host during quick formatting, the formatting in the background might affect the
performance. For this reason, HP recommends that you monitor the performance of the volumes.

To execute quick formatting, you must create the system disk. To execute quick formatting of the
internal volumes, you must ensure that the internal volumes are in blocked status. For detailed
information, see

“ Quick Formatting the LDEVs” (page 82)

.

The Quick Format feature cannot be used on the following volumes:

Volumes other than the internal volume

Volumes whose access attribute is not Read/Write

Pool volumes

Journal volumes

Volumes for a system disk

Quorum disks

Overview of Configuring External Mainframe Volumes

To use external volumes with the storage system, usually you must use HP StorageWorks XP External
Storage Software to perform external volume mapping, and then use the Format command of
Virtual LVI to format the volumes (see

“Formatting the LDEVs” (page 79)

). However, when you

format external mainframe volumes in this way, the formatting operation may take some time.

If you follow the procedure in this section, you will be able to make external mainframe volumes
usable more quickly.

Only storage administrators can perform the following operation. Storage partition administrators
cannot perform this operation:
