Rendering

When you apply more effects to a clip than your computer
can process in real time, you need to render temporary media
files to watch your sequence in real time.

This chapter covers the following:

What Is Rendering?

Render Indicators in Final Cut Express HD

(p. 879)

The Rendering Process

What Is Rendering?

Rendering is the process of creating temporary video and audio render files for portions
of your sequence that Final Cut Express HD cannot play in real time. When you render a
portion of your sequence, Final Cut Express HD substitutes those portions with the
render files, as indicated by render status bars above the ruler in the Timeline. If you
change the parameters of your effects, you need to rerender.

Since rendering takes time away from the editing process, the goal is to render as little
as possible. For more information about real-time playback, see Chapter 59, “

Using RT

Extreme

,” on page 865.
