Dell Latitude LM Reference and Troubleshooting Guide

Parallel Mode

PARALLEL MODE

controls whether the computer’s paral-

lel port acts as an AT-compatible (unidirectional), PS/2-
compatible (bidirectional), EPP-compatible, or ECP-
compatible port. You can also disable the port and free its
assigned LPT address for another device. The default set-
ting for this option is

BI-DIRECTIONAL

.

Other possible

settings are

DISABLED

,

NORMAL

,

EPP

,

and ECP

.

Diskette Mode

When

DISKETTE MODE

is set to

NO REBOOT

(the default),

you do not have to reboot after installing a diskette drive
in the options bay or attaching a diskette drive to the
parallel connector on the back of the computer. However,
some application programs—such as virus scans—that
access the diskette drive will run very slowly. When

DISKETTE MODE

is set to

REBOOT

, such application pro-

grams run at normal speed, but you must reboot after
installing or attaching a diskette drive.

Video Mode

VIDEO MODE

sends the video signal to the display only

(

LCD MODE

), an external monitor only (

CRT MODE

), or to

both (

SIMUL MODE

).

NOTE: When an external monitor is attached to the
monitor connector, the computer does not enter suspend

mode when the display is closed. Instead, the computer
sends its video signal to the external monitor.

Touch Pad

TOUCH PAD

lets you enable or disable the touch pad in

Windows 3.x. If you are using Windows 95, the operating
system determines if an external mouse is attached to the
computer and automatically configures this option. The
default setting is

ENABLED

. Select

DISABLED

when you

want to attach a serial mouse to the computer.

If you attach a PS/2 mouse, the computer automatically
detects the mouse and disables this option (but does not
change the setting).

CD-ROM Drive Speed

CD-ROM DRIVE SPEED

lets you compensate for imbalanced

CDs, which can cause the computer to vibrate when the
CD-ROM drive is in use. This option allows you to use
discs that might otherwise be unreadable. This option is
available for CD-ROM drives with speeds of 6X or higher.

If this option is set to

HIGH PERFORMANCE

(the default),

the CD-ROM drive always runs at the highest speed. If
this option is set to

VARIABLE

, the CD-ROM drive auto-

matically lowers its speed to reduce or stop the vibration
caused by the imbalanced CD.

NOTE: When this option is set to

VARIABLE

, the CD-

ROM drive takes several seconds to determine the proper
speed. You cannot access the disc during that time.

For a change in the

CD-ROM DRIVE SPEED

option to take

effect, select

SAVE CHANGES & EXIT

from the Exit menu.

(For more information, see “Exit Menu Options” found
later in this chapter.)

Security Menu Options

The following subsections explain each option in the
Security menu of the Setup program (Figure 2-3). The
same information is also available in the topic titled
“Security Menu” in the online System User’s Guide.
