Dell Latitude LM Reference and Troubleshooting Guide

Backup Password

Use the

BACKUP PASSWORD

option to back up a pass-

word onto a diskette. Use the diskette to access the
computer if you forget the password.

NOTE: This option appears on the Security Menu only
when the administrator password has been used to enter
the Setup program.

When you set this option to

ENABLED

, insert a formatted

diskette into the diskette drive and press <

ENTER

> to save

the password to the diskette. If you forget the password,
insert the diskette into the diskette drive when prompted
for the password. Then type

floppy

and press

<

ENTER

>.

Password on Boot

When the

PASSWORD ON BOOT

option is enabled, you

must enter a password before the computer loads the
operating system into memory. To enable this option, the

ADMIN PASSWORD

option must be enabled and an admin-

istrator password assigned.

Settings for this option are

DISABLED

(the

PRIMARY

PASSWORD

option default) and

ENABLED

.

NOTE: If the

ADMIN PASSWORD

option is enabled and

the

PASSWORD ON BOOT

option is disabled, the com-

puter assumes the user is booting the computer.

Power Menu Options

The following subsections explain each option in the
Power menu of the Setup program (Figure 2-4). The
same information is also available in the topic titled
“Power Menu” in the online System User’s Guide

NOTE: You can also use the Windows-based Power-
Panel to control some of the computer’s power
management features. Power settings override corre-
sponding settings in the Power menu of the Setup
program. For more information about the PowerPanel,
see the topic “Using the PowerPanel” in the online
Sys-
tem User’s Guide.

CAUTION: Dell strongly recommends that you
back up your password onto a diskette. If you for-
get the password and do not have it on diskette,
you cannot access the computer. In that case, you
must return the computer to Dell at your expense.
Technicians will disable the password feature and
send the computer back to you at your expense.
