NOTE: Set this option to DISABLED if it causes compati-
bility problems with your software.
Suspend Time-Out
SUSPEND TIME-OUT lets you determine how long the
computer remains idle (no I/O activity) before activating
suspend mode to conserve battery power. Settings for this
option are
DISABLED , 1 MIN. , 2 MIN. , 3 MIN. (the default),
5 MIN. , 10 MIN. , 15 MIN. , and 30 MIN.
To increase battery operating time, set this option to a
lower number of minutes.
If the time delay you set for suspend mode is greater than
the delay set for standby mode or suspend to disk mode,
the computer enters suspend mode first. For instance, if
SUSPEND TIME-OUT is set for 10 minutes and SUSPEND-
TO-DISK TIME-OUT is set for 5 minutes, the computer
enters suspend mode after 10 minutes of no I/O activity
and then enters suspend-to-disk mode 5 minutes later.

If you are not in the Setup program, you can activate sus-
pend mode at any time by pressing <
FN >< ESC >. Press
any key on the built-in keyboard to resume normal
computer operation.
Suspend-to-Disk Time-Out
SUSPEND-TO-DISK TIME-OUT lets you determine how
long the computer remains idle (no I/O activity) before
activating suspend-to-disk mode to conserve battery
power. Settings for this option are
DISABLED , 1 MIN. ,
2 MIN. , 3 MIN. , 5 MIN. , 10 MIN. (the default), 15 MIN. , and
30 MIN.
If you are not in the Setup program, you can activate sus-
pend-to-disk mode at any time by pressing <
FN ><a>.
Press the power button and hold it down for a second or
two to turn on the computer and resume normal
operation.
Hard-Disk Drive Time-Out
HARD-DISK DRIVE TIME-0UT lets you determine how long
the computer remains idle (no I/O activity) before the
hard-disk drive turns off to conserve battery power. Set-
tings for this option are
1 MIN. , 2 MIN. (the default),
3 MIN. , 5 MIN. , 10 MIN. , 15 MIN. , 20 MIN. , and DISABLED.
Use this feature when the computer is engaged in an
activity, such as calculations, that rarely accesses the
hard-disk drive.
NOTE: To lengthen the life of the hard-disk drive, Dell
recommends setting this option to the lowest possible set-
ting that works for you.
DIM Mode Time-Out
DIM MODE TIME-OUT lets you determine how long the
computer remains idle (no I/O activity) before the display
begins dimming slowly to conserve battery power. Set-
tings for this option are
DISABLED , 15 SEC. , 30 SEC. (the
default), and 60 SEC. The display begins to brighten
again when you press any key on the built-in keyboard.
Use this option to conserve battery power when you are
working with the computer intermittently or when the
computer is performing a task that does not require your
input.
NOTE: To save battery power, Dell recommends that you
always set this option to the lowest setting that affords
comfortable viewing when the computer is being powered
by a battery. You can conserve up to 5 percent of battery
power by using the minimum brightness.
