GATHERING OVER CORD

Ordinary gathering with a basting stitch often
breaks while pulling in fullness. A small zigzag

across a cord such as crochet thread or carpet
thread, gives a much stronger cord for gathering
fullness into fabrics. Once the gathers have been
stitched in place, the cord can be pulled out in
order to eliminate bulk.

OVERCASTING
The multiple stitch zigzag is an excellent choice
for overcasting. It keeps the fabric flat and
prevents raveling. For most fabrics, this stitch is
better than the zigzag stitch for overcasting.

The stitch should fall right at the raw edge of the

abric. Feed the fabric under the presser foot by

guiding the raw edge along the right hand side of

he hole in the presser foot.

PATCHING

The multiple stitch zigzag is an excellent stitch
for patching. It is stronger than the zigzag and
the tiny stitches bu^ into the fabric to make an

almost invisible stitch when using matching
thread.

Place the patch over the right side of the worn or

damaged area. Sew around the patch with the
multiple stitch zigzag letting the last stitch to the
right overcast the edge of the patch. When turn
ing corners leave the needle in the fabric at the

corner. Usually this will be the furthest stitch to
the right or left. In this way, the corners are
doubly stitched and very strong. When the patch
is stitched in place, trim away the excess worn

fabric on the wrong side of the patch.

Note: Try ^Smocking Stitch for knits.
